The 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) celebrates its Official Finale on 28 March with a performance of Jewels by the Bolshoi Ballet. This year’s HKAF presents over 1,400 acclaimed artists from at home and around the world in 137 performances. Of the 112,000 available tickets, over 106,000 tickets have been sold, representing an average attendance of 95%. The total audience number is estimated at 117,000, including 11,000 Young Friends. A total of 16 new works/world premieres and 10 Asian premieres have been presented. A performance of Drama Queens by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato is still to come on 6 May.

Yue opera fans are mostly female, but in Hong Kong, there’s a superfan called Jonathan and he’s young.
Jonathan was 6 in 1983, “I remember Five Daughters Offering Felicitations most vividly. It was grand, lots of characters, the costumes were beautiful. The story’s quite complicated. As the production of Datong - The Chinese Utopia enters its final stages, the HKAF is hosting the exhibition, “Datong and The World of Kang Youwei” at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre to give audiences an overview about the historical backdrop and the fascinating characters of Datong.

Hotly anticipated, Gala Flamenca promises to be a dance spectacular, bringing together some of Flamenco’s leading lights – “the best of the best from Spain”.

Three weeks ago on 15 October, the Japan Art Association in Tokyo presented Arvo Pärt with the prestigious Praemium Imperiale cultural award, considered equal to the Nobel Prize in the field of culture. The Imperiale prize has been presented since 1989 by the Japanese imperial family through the Japan Art Association. Hitachi, Prince of Japan, and honorary patron of the association personally presented Pärt with the award.
In celebration of Pärt’s 80th birthday in 2015, Theatre of Voices performs a programme of the composers’s most beautiful choral music.

Datong – The Chinese Utopia, the all new chamber opera production is on the way! Commissioned and produced by the HKAF, writer and filmmaker Evans Chan - the librettist of Datong, gathered with composer Chan Hing-yan, director Tang Shu-wing and conductor Lio Kuokman in the making of Datong’s promotional trailer. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the opera explores Kang Youwei’s vision of a global utopia and promises to be a dramatic and fascinating spectacle.
