Brian Friel
Born in County Tyrone in 1929 Friel is one of Ireland’s most prominent playwrights. His works premiered and were produced at the world’s most prestigious venues like the Abbey Theatre, the West End and Broadway. Winner of numerous honours, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Literature from the National University of Ireland and was nominated to the Irish Senate in 1987. His plays won many prizes — Dancing at Lughnasa alone won three Tony awards. Friel often explored the idea of truth and communication in his work and the subjectivity of individual experience which creates the illusion of multiple realities.
