New Stage Series
The Hong Kong Arts Festival introduce the New Stage Series in 2011. It aims to provide a multi-disciplinary platform for emerging and experienced artists to meet new challenges and create new and innovative work.
Ancient Paths, Modern Voices “She has an amazing ability to represent and reinterpret in sound form.” Yo-Yo Ma
Hailed as one of the most exciting composers of her generation, Angel Lam’s work has been embraced by many of the world’s most prominent performers. Her composition Empty Mountain, Spirit Rain, commissioned by Carnegie Hall, has been performed on Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble’s worldwide tours since 2007; the work was also featured on the CD Off the Map, which was recently nominated for a 2011 Grammy Award.
Blending storytelling with an expressive emotional soundscape that reflects a passion for life, June Lovers tells a lyrical love story through semi-staged scenes, deeply felt songs and narration. Female and male vocalists will engage in expressive, moving coloratura songs, as well as rap and rock vocal styles, weaving together an intriguing story of marriage attitudes in China and their profound effects on the ascent and decay of a society.
