Naamyam was the most popular form of entertainment in Guangdong and Hong Kong in the first half of the 20th century. A form of Cantonese narrative song commonly performed by blind singers, naamyam's melancholic lament could once be heard in houses of pleasure and high society homes alike.
Now a fast disappearing art form, with fewer than 10 performers active in Hong Kong today, female naamyam singers are even more of a rarity. HKAF has gathered these few remaining female singers for two unique concerts set in the serene landscape of Nan Lian Garden. Performing on the same stage for the first time, the three artists - the oldest in her 80s - will showcase the differing styles of naamyam from Hong Kong, Macau and Guangzhou.
Don't miss the chance to hear the exponents of this Cantonese vernacular cultural treasure.
