Dance Gala: Programme 1 (21 Feb 2013 7:30pm) Festival Opening
Dance Gala: Programme 2 (22-23 Feb 2013 7:30pm)

Brace yourself for the thrill of the Asian premiere of Symphony #9, a new work by Alexei Ratmansky, ABT’s artist-in-residence and the world’s leading ballet choreographer today. Ratmansky regards the piece as “very interesting dramaturgy” combining “very merry light music, some dramatic music and some melodramatic”.

Look out as well for José Limón’s stylised and tension-filled take on Shakespeare’s Othello in The Moor’s Pavane and Mark Morris’ witty and virtuosic Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes. Be captivated by the pas de deux from Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes, a spirited work with tongue-in-cheek humour, set to John Philip Sousa's exhilarating marches, along with Black Swan pas de deux from Swan Lake.

Romeo and Juliet
27 Feb 2013 (wed) - 1 Mar 2013 (fri) 7:30pm
2-3 Mar 2013 (sat-sun) 2:30pm & 7:45pm

The crown jewel of the ABT’s offering is Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet, arguably the best known and most beloved dance version of this enduring Shakespeare romantic tragedy. Visually sumptuous and rich in character, nuance and sensuality, this rendition is regarded as one of ABT’s grandest productions. The work is a promise of precision, grace and versatility, as well as a showcase of ABT’s tradition of passion, innovation and athleticism.

The ABT dancers mentioned in this website will appear in different ABT performances for their Hong Kong visit. Cast lists for individual programmes will be confirmed nearer to the performance dates.

American Ballet Theatre
Artistic Director: Kevin McKenzie

Few ballet companies equal American Ballet Theatre (ABT) for its combination of size, scope, and outreach. Recognized as a living national treasure since its founding in 1940, the ABT performs annually across America to an audience of more than 600,000. The company has performed in 132 cities in 42 countries over its 70 years’ history.

Maestro’s Art

It all looks so deceptively easy, waving your hands in the air to time a beat. Conducting is so much more: unifying performers, setting tempo, and shaping the sound. The challenges faced by a conductor for ballet is quite different than for an ensemble. Great conductors are also talented musicians. In this series, learn about the differences, and the opportunities to shape great performances.

Conducting for Dance
The Leaves are Fading to the music of Antonin Dvorak, The Moor’s Pavane to the music of Henry Purcell, Symphony in C to the music of Georges Bizet: three very different pieces of music. The challenges faced by a conductor for ballet are quite different than for an ensemble. Observe the conducting process at the technical rehearsal of American Ballet Theatre, followed by a discussion with conductor David LaMarche.

About Dance
Ballet, contemporary, hip hop, dance-illusion - all may sound vastly different. They have one thing in common: using the body to tell a story. Through this series of workshops, backstage tours and meet-the-artist sessions, find out what it all means and how the artists tell their unique stories.

Behind the Scenes at Romeo & Juliet

Meet Kevin McKenzie
A well known dancer and choreographer, artistic director of American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Kevin McKenzie is certainly versatile. In his 20 years at ABT, McKenzie has brought innovation in commissioned new works and in securing Alexei Ratmansky, one of the most sought after choreographers in ballet, as artist-in-residence. Hear him reflect on his tenure at ABT after the performances.
