Special Remarks Special Remarks

Asia Pacific Dance Platform has been introducing the region’s audacious dance artists to Hong Kong and overseas audiences in the past four years. This year, the three choreographers/dancers bring their singular perspectives to reflect on life’s fury and frustration.

and Mr (Israel)
Choreographer: Rachel Erdos
Dancer: Ido Tadmor

Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Mr addresses the themes of identity, trauma and fading youth. The work is set in a dimly-lit room where Ido Tadmor confronts loneliness and constraints. His intense movements are choreographed by Rachel Erdos, who won the Aarhus International Choreography Competition 2008 (Denmark) and had work shown in the Royal Opera House (UK). Tadmor, recipient of life achievement award Landau Prix (Israel), was a lead dancer at Batsheva Dance Company (Israel) and Lar Lubovitch Dance Company (New York).

Traverse (Taiwan)
Choreographer/Dancer: Sun Shang-chi

Fleeting and lingering by turn to music resembling the rhythm of heartbeats, dancer-choreographer Sun Shang-chi, travels through different states of the body, simultaneously experiencing the past and the future in space. At once gripping and emancipating, Traverse shows Sun’s speed, fluidity and choreographic versatility. He has worked with renowned companies and festivals, including Sasha Waltz (Berlin), Nürnberg Dance Theatre (Germany), Festival Tanz im August (Berlin), Festival d’Avignon and International Taipei Arts Festival.

Working Process (China)
Choreographer/Dancer: Er Gao

In Working Process, dancer-choreographer Er Gao from Guangzhou, demonstrates refinement, restraint and reticence. Inspired by the qualities of traditional earthenware he explores the inexplicable and unpredictable human body. Pottery is used as musical instruments in the performance together with recorded sound by experimental folk singer-songwriter Liang Yiyuan. He has collaborated with various dance groups and artists, including Emio Greco | PC (Netherlands), Tanzcompagnie Rubato (Germany) and Guangdong Modern Dance Company (China).

About Dance

Ballet, contemporary, hip hop, dance-illusion - all may sound vastly different. They have one thing in common: using the body to tell a story. Through this series of workshops, backstage tours and meet-the-artist sessions, find out what it all means and how the artists tell their unique stories.

Surface and Space of Movements Workshop
Beginning with the inner space of the body, Sun Shang-chi extends the frame of movement in three dimensionality. His techniques, combining ballet, contemporary dance as well as Tai Chi, allow dancers to consciously utilise the “resonance” of movements in dance. In this workshop, learn how improvisation based on everyday life experience gives you the opportunity to play with these qualities and to use them in dance phrases.

Meet the Artists of the Asia Pacific Dance Platform
Three  dancer-choreographers with three unique perspectives on life’s fury and frustration. What inspired Sun Shang-chi,  Er Gao and Rachel Erdos (choreographer for Ido Tadmor) to create their unique works? Let the artists share their thoughts with you after the performances.
