Impossible to tear your eyes away

"Electrifying Strindberg adaptation prompts not shock or horror but desperate sadness."   Theartsdesk.com

A smash hit in Edinburgh, New York and London, critics have exhausted superlatives in praising this sensational new version of Miss Julie, Strindberg’s 1888 drama about class, love and lust.

Relocated to her native homeland, award-winning South African director Yael Farber’s Mies Julie is 90 minutes of constantly mounting tension, as the deadly attraction between a black farm labourer and his white master’s daughter spirals out of control.

In  the  steamy  kitchen  of  a  remote  farmhouse,  their  battle  over  power,  sexuality, memory, race and land lays bare the visceral struggles of post-apartheid South Africa. An explosive night of tenderness and brutality reveals all too clearly the reality of what can never be recovered.

From its first moment this five-star production from the Baxter Theatre Centre at the University of Cape Town grips you by the throat; and never lets go. Erotic, intimate and epic, it thrums with menace and passion. An overwhelming experience, with a climax that is almost unbearable.

Meet-the-Artist - Adapting Mies Julie
21 Feb 2014 (Post-performance)

What does the coupling of the daughter of a Boer farmer and her family servant and its aftermath say about relationships between men and women, and the new South Africa? Adapting a story as complex as this one is not easy. Let the cast of Mies Julie tell you how they did it.
