Introduction

Fredric Mao creates Cantonese opera for the modern age

Distinguished theatre veteran Fredric Mao collaborates with the HKAF to create new classics of Cantonese opera, combining the best of opera traditions and the essence of modern theatre vision. Following an enthusiastic popular and critical response to his earlier work, this brand-new creative initiative will reimagine beloved highlights from the Cantonese opera repertoire.

Mao will explore the creative possibilities inspired by the artistic dialogue between director and performers and also make use of a new music arrangement. The programme includes selections from the popular The Butterfly Dream from the Ming period, The Butterfly and Red Pear Blossoms adapted by Tong Tik-sang and made immortal by Cantonese opera giants Yam Kim-fai and Bak Suet-sin, as well as Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang and Dorgon from the late Qing period.

After each performance, Mao will share with the audience his creative concepts and methods in creating these new productions.
