A co-production of the HKAF and the HKAPA Dance School

A monumental dance work requiring a cast of more than 50 dancers, Stephanie Lake’s powerful and exhilarating Colossus explores, through intricate choreography, relationships between the individual and the collective, solitary striving and joyous union, chaos and order. The unusually large number of dancers from the Dance School of the HKAPA, will ensure the show has an unforgettable impact. In Lake’s words, “A single leaf is interesting but thousands of leaves moving in the wind is breathtaking.”
“Thrilling and frightening and entirely unforgettable” ★★★★★ Time Out

“Wildly mesmerising. When the performance comes to an end, there is stillness and a silence as if we’re not exactly sure what we have just witnessed…before a standing ovation.” Dance Informa

Named number one show of 2018 by Time Out Melbourne

A 57-strong troupe of dancers from the HKAPA School of Dance
performs a challenging and exhilarating work of intricate choreography and dramatic power

The show has been described as a “kick to the solar plexus”, and even the global pandemic has proven unable to stop the international momentum of Stephanie Lake’s Colossus.

International productions of the work are personally coordinated by Lake via Zoom, and have been critically acclaimed, just like the original Australian show. The same approach will be taken for the performance at the 50th HKAF, with the troupe of 57 dancers drawn from the HKAPA and directed remotely by Lake, with the assistance of two rehearsal directors from the Academy.

Colossus is about the individual’s place within the collective and the shared experiences of close proximity. Intricately choreographed and explosively dynamic, the show has been called “expansively political and almost microscopically intimate” by The Australian Book Review, which added that “with this sumptuous and thorny masterpiece Lake has cemented herself at the heart of Australian dance”.

Stephanie Lake is a multi-award-winning choreographer and dancer. In 2018 she was awarded both the Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Choreography. Her intriguing and virtuosic dance show Dual played to Hong Kong audiences at the 2017 HKAF, to critical acclaim.

Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to see one of the most exciting dance shows of recent years !
