Introduction

Jonas Kaufmann stars in Korngold's epic drama of love and obsession

In the forgotten city of Bruges, widower Paul is tormented with grief for his dead wife. A chance meeting in the streets of this “dead city” sends him off to a world where past and present collide, and emotions acquire a fearful power. Composed when Korngold was just 23, this sumptuous psychological drama shows why he was considered one of music’s greatest prodigies, and this striking 2019 production moves the action into the 21st century—drawing a truly devastating performance from Jonas Kaufmann as Paul. Soprano Marlis Petersen is equally compelling, and with conductor Kirill Petrenko bringing an unequalled sensitivity to Korngold’s sumptuous score, critics have called this production “exceptional”.
