INTRODUCTION

Sit down for dinner with the Wongs, a typical Hong Kong family, at three vital Hong Kong moments. A Floating Family is a funny and poignant trilogy of plays that portrays four siblings and their extended family over three dinners in the course of two decades, charting their lives as they ebb and flow alongside Hong Kong through political, economic and social changes.

This trilogy of standalone plays is created by award-winning playwright Loong Man-hong and established director Fong Chun-kit, and stars some of the most sought-after names of Hong Kong theatre.

Play One: Hong Kong Astronaut
Cast: Yip Chun, Alice Lau, Poon Chan-leung, Lai Yuk-ching, Shirley Tsoi, Yeung Wai-lun, Kate Yeung, Wong Ching-yan

1996. One year before Hong Kong’s change of sovereignty.

The trilogy opens with a farewell dinner for Chau-wing, the eldest son, on the eve of his emigration to Canada to join the ranks of overseas “astronauts”. He is pulled in every direction by family duties, sibling camaraderie and spousal devotion. Suppressed disagreements and personal desires rear their ugly heads in this family gathering. Dishes are served with a hearty helping of pre-handover anxiety.

Play Two: All Out of Love
Cast: Yip Chun, Alice Lau, Poon Chan-leung, Lai Yuk-ching, Shirley Tsoi, Yeung Wai-lun, Wong Ching-yan

2004. In the aftermath of SARS — in which the bright side of Hong Kong’s spirit shone through.

Winter Solstice (Chinese Thanksgiving) is when children come home for a feast, but not without turbulence at the Wong’s. The patriarch Foon is now incapacitated by illness; one daughter Chun-ping struggles with the dwindling family business, while the other, Ha-mei, insists on working for a tabloid; which leaves the little brother Dung awkward and silent as usual. An inescapable dinner and intractable problems in a new era, in this city that is their home.

Play Three: Vacant in the City
Cast: Poon Chan-leung, Lai Yuk-ching, Shirley Tsoi, Yeung Wai-lun, Wong Ching-yan

2017. Twenty years after Hong Kong’s reunification with China. Financial crises storm through the city; protesters occupied and dispersed.

The fifth Chief Executive is about to be elected by a committee of 1,200 representatives, amongst them Chau-wing, now head of the family and a businessman. The Wong family gathers in a house and city filled with difficult situations: death and unemployment haunt the family but there is also hope in a new business venture. Will they get to the crux of the family’s secrets?

One ordinary Hong Kong family. Twenty years of floating, in search of...
