Introduction

For the late, great Austrian pianist Paul Badura-Skoda, the playing of Chen Sa was like that of “an angel from heaven”, and the juries of three of the world’s most important piano competitions—the Leeds International, the Van Cliburn International and the International Chopin Competitions—have all recognised this Chongqing-born pianist as an exceptional talent.

Chen Sa, said The Guardian, “is a natural for Chopin, sparklingly clear in touch and perfectly attuned to the composer’s lyrical melancholy”, and two Chopin nocturnes are included in this programme, which also features two of Beethoven’s piano sonatas and Schumann’s Kreisleriana, which the composer dedicated to Chopin.
