HUANG YI & KUKA
Mar 1-2, Drama Theatre, HKAPA

Huang Yi named by Dance Magazine as one of the “25 to Watch”

“These strong emotional currents flow through HUANG YI & KUKA, presented by 3-Legged Dog, making it more than just an amusing exercise in blending dance and technology.” New York Times

“Dancing face to face with a robot is like looking at my own face in a mirror... I think I have found the key to spin human emotions into robots.” Huang Yi

As a child, Huang Yi longed for a robot companion. As an adult, he created a robot to dance with.

Acclaimed Taiwanese choreographer and dancer Huang Yi and his robot companion KUKA bring razor sharp precision and stunning artistry to Hong Kong. HUANG YI & KUKA reveals humanity through a series of vignettes between live dancers and KUKA, a robot conceptualised and programmed by Huang. Harmoniously weaving together the art of dance and the science of mechanical engineering, HUANG YI & KUKA is a poetic work that flawlessly intertwines modern dance with the realm of robotics.

From Starting to Cut the Wood
Mar 12-13, Black Box Theatre, Kwai Tsing Theatre

“An evening of silent conversation and ensuing hours of a great many ideas to reflect upon.” Jakarta Post

Against the soundscape of a traditional Indonesian village’s bird and street life, we hear the tools of the mask-maker – saw, ax, chisel, sandpaper and fine brush – conjuring images and a reflective solitude.

Dancer Ari Ersandi translates these sounds into movement, exploring the complex relationships among the body, materials, tools, and the very process of work and the environment. It is an exchange between the dancer and his response to these sounds; he is becoming the wood itself, which is being transformed into a mask – an object of spiritual significance.

Taking the process of mask making as a metaphor for the relationship between mankind, work and existence, From Starting to Cut the Wood is an astonishing live mix of dance, sound, mask-making, philosophy and performance art. It juxtaposes ancient and contemporary human behavior to ask where we have come from and where we are going.
