Cross-disciplinary, cross-border collaborations that spark the flame of creativity

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series (CDS) is a platform that features local dance artists and facilitates international cultural exchange. At the 2020 HKAF, a double-bill programme, Dance Across Borders pairs choreographers from the UK and Mainland China with local artists to co-create two 30-minute pieces; acclaimed local choreographer Victor Fung returns to explore of the logos of contemporary dance through Finding Meaning in an Uncertain World, a 50-minute immersive sound experience; and a mixed-bill programme Voice Out brings together a group of local dancer–choreographers with a strong urge to speak their minds through their bodies.

Dance Across Borders

A fusion of styles, from popping to unlocking

At the 2020 HKAF, the Dance Across Borders double-bill programme pairs choreographers from the UK and Mainland China with local artists to co-create two 30-minute pieces.

Five local creative performers will create a vibrant piece layered with cultural juxtapositions together with the UK dance artist and internationally renowned popping dancer, Dickson Mbi. In another work, HKAF will collaborate with the Beijing-based Young Artists’ Platform. Mainland choreographer–dancer Gong Zhonghui teams up with Kelvin Mak, former dancer for the City Contemporary Dance Company and France’s Ballet Preljocaj, to untie the knots of repression in another dance–theatre piece.

With their contrasting approaches and aesthetics, this double-bill is sure to be a hub of synergy!
