Lin Hwai-min - Five decades of showing Asia's cultures and sensibility through dance

An evening retrospective programme with an Asian dance legend

"Cloud Gate affirmed the glory of beauty itself" The New York Times

In the same year that saw the first HKAF, Lin Hwai-min founded Taiwan’s world famous Cloud Gate company. He has been the company’s artistic driving force from the start. Time Magazine calls him ‘one of Asia’s heroes’.

Well known to HK audiences from previous visits, Cloud Gate is unlike any other major dance ensemble. Its performers train in meditation, martial arts, and calligraphy. They transform ancient aesthetics into thrilling, modern celebrations of movement with a unique, Chinese perspective. In 2019, Lin will step down from his role as the company's artistic director. Honoured throughout the dance world, Lin is the winner of the coveted Samuel H Scripps/American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement.

This farewell gala highlights different facets of an extraordinary creativity. From tranquility to tumult, Moon Water, White Water, Wind Shadow and Rice thrillingly express different moods of nature. Cursive 1 and Pine Smoke create exquisite movement that reflects the flowing beauty of calligraphy while other works are Lin’s choreographic love letters to his homeland, portraying the soul of Taiwan.

Whether a prestigious theatre or site-specific rice paddy, the whole world has been Lin’s stage. He has redefined the art of dance.
