Music documentaries of Frank Scheffer, with live performances
The Dutch filmmaker Frank Scheffer’s music documentaries and his exceptional access to major musicians of the day have made him a unique and powerful musical chronicler. Since the 1980s, Scheffer has interviewed the great composers of our time, including John Cage, Pierre Boulez, Elliott Carter, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Edgard Varèse’s protégé Chou Wen-chung, documenting their creative journeys through his lens, allowing the viewer a close and personal encounter with these musical giants. Three Scheffer classics are presented in this series – Voyage to Cythera, a documentary on Luciano Berio's extraordinary, kaleidoscopic Sinfonia. Conducting Mahler features interviews of conductors on their personal relationships with Mahler's music. In Inner Landscape, Scheffer captures the creative process of Guo Wenjing in making his chamber opera Si Fan. Two of them will be accompanied by live performances to illuminate and complement the films.
