Charlie Parker – 100 years on and still flying high

In 2020, the world celebrates 100 years since the birth of one of the greatest innovators in jazz: alto saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker, the founding father of bebop, whose revolutionary influence is felt as strongly today as it was in his all too brief lifetime. In honour of the anniversary, the HKAF presents the world premiere of a programme of radical modern responses to Parker’s music, arranged and performed by “jaw-dropping” (Pitchfork) saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa and three-time Grammy Award-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington in the questing spirit the high-flying Bird himself embodied.

“In a time where the words ‘innovation’ and ‘genius’ are overused, we are excited to celebrate a man who truly embodied both, and the best way one shows admiration is not to age their work but to show their influence and how their work resonates in a modern age,” says Mahanthappa. “We firmly believe that Bird would have wanted his legacy to resonate in this fashion.”

Since 2011, Mahanthappa has been named alto saxophonist of the year for seven of eight years running in DownBeat Magazine’s International Critics’ Poll. His co-director Carrington (Mosaic Project, 2017 HKAF) is one of the world’s most highly regarded drummers and has played with a who’s who of jazz luminaries as well as leading her own bands. Together they lead an all-star line-up of acclaimed musicians for a heartfelt, high energy tribute to Charlie Parker’s razor-sharp music.
