Experience the unique “Swiss approach” by the legendary Heinz Holliger, who will be conducting Kammerorchester Basel to perform works of his own and contemporary Swiss composer Schoeck - featuring celebrated baritone Christian Gerhaher!
“[Holliger] is now widely recognised as one of the most important figures of his European generation.” The Guardian

Maestro Heinz Holliger, the legendary world-class oboist, is also a conductor and composer who devotes himself to preserving classical repertoire while exploring new performance techniques. These are values also held by the Kammerorchester Basel (Basel Chamber Orchestra), which has been searching for new ways of musical interpretation with both historical and modern instruments. The award-winning orchestra will perform Holliger’s own Meta Arca, an intriguing piece that showcases the entire orchestra’s excellent strings. They will also be joined by celebrated baritone Christian Gerhaher—praised as the “natural heir of the great Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau”—for the late-Romantic Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck’s Elegie song cycle. Schoeck’s biographer noted that his lyrical and dramatic work progresses “from spring to autumn, from the presence of the beloved to the vaguest memory of her, and from life to death”. With a composer, an orchestra and a conductor all from Switzerland, their “Swiss approach” will bring an unforgettable experience to the 2020 Festival.

Shockheaded Peter Teacher’s Workshop

Shockheaded Peter is one of the most significant children’s books in German history. Through a collection of morality tales, the book steers the young reader towards the path of good behavior. The Kammerorchester Basel, recent recipient of the 2019 Swiss Music Prize, will adapt four stories from Shockheaded Peter into a music demonstration for local teachers, sharing insight on music pedagogy.
