Marco Mezquida

“The man from Menorca is the best thing that has happened to jazz piano in our country in this century, and his project arranging and rearranging Maestro Ravel is a good example of that.” El País

Hailed as a great ‘pianista’ and ‘improvisador’ – and still only 31 – Marco Mezquida can already look back on a career rich in achievement. Recognized as one of the finest jazz pianists of his generation, he has been acclaimed Musician of the Year no fewer than four times by the Association of Jazz Musicians and Modern Music of Catalonia, and is frequently compared to Keith Jarrett, with whom he shares the distinction of being equally impressive as a solo performer and ensemble player.

For his Hong Kong debut, Mezquida performs both as a soloist and in a trio with cellist Martín Meléndez and percussionist Aleix Tobias. Alone at the keys, he is particularly known for the subtlety and originality with which he plays a ‘prepared’ piano, exploring different sounds produced by means which include placing percussion instruments or other objects inside the body of the piano, and plucking the strings to produce harp or zither-like effects. Each performance is an entirely spontaneous and unique excursion into the musical imagination of a great jazz pianist.

With the trio, Mezquida plays Ravel’s Dreams, a work inspired by the life and work of the great French composer Maurice Ravel, who was himself strongly influenced by early jazz. The performance takes the audience on a dreamlike voyage into Ravel’s inner world towards the end of his life, as his fine musical mind slipped into aphasia. Drawing on Mezquida’s profound understanding of Ravel, his influences and the way they shaped his hugely influential compositions, this ambitious work offers a fascinating jazz perspective on one of the great minds of modern music.

Jorge da Rocha

"Jorge da Rocha dazzles us with his way of creating millions of different sounds only with the instrument and his versatile voice" No Solo Fado (Portugal)

In an innovative solo format that combines contrasting and complementary acoustic and electronic elements, Portuguese-born double-bassist Jorge da Rocha presents a selection of his “favourite songs” by artists ranging from Björk and Radiohead to Portuguese songwriter Zeca Afonso. He also plays some of his own original compositions which embody a unique synthesis of eclectic influences from jazz and electronic music to alternative rock. An imaginative improvisator and eloquently expressive instrumentalist, da Rocha supplies his own vocal and percussion accompaniments while operating a loop station. His passionate solo performances are characterized by versatility, virtuosity and an unerring skill at making a direct and unforgettable emotional connection with his audiences.

Da Rocha also performs with flautist Yexza Lara and cellist Ana Conceição in the World Music Weekend, which will present different facets of his unique musical vision to the Hong Kong audience. Please click here for details.
