An exuberant celebration of the grand Viennese tradition
Crafted and honed by legendary conductors including Furtwängler, Karajan, Sawallisch and Giulini, the Wiener Symphoniker boasts 120 years of rich cultural heritage and musical excellence along with an impressive catalogue of recordings. To this day, the orchestra remains a cherished institution in Vienna and around the world.
Recalling the glamorous Silver Age of waltzes and operettas, the orchestra celebrated the 150th anniversary of Franz Lehár with a tribute to The Merry Widow, Land of Smiles and other memorable works. At Theater an der Wien where these mesmerising tunes began life, the sensational and magnetic Piotr Beczała headed a stellar line-up, including the phenomenal soprano Camilla Nylund and maestro Manfred Honeck, who has been awarded Artist of the Year in the 2018 International Classical Music Awards.
