A riveting drama of unwavering love through separation and reunion

Cantonese opera A Thorn Hairpin is a riveting drama of unwavering love through separation and reunion, starring on-and-off-screen couple Liza Wang and Law Kar-ying alongside a star-studded cast of veteran Cantonese opera artists. This version preserves the poignant, dramatic tension of Yip Siu-tak’s script, while recalling the indelible original production, staged for the first time since 2003.

The HKAF is proud to restage this performance after its cancellation in March 2020 due to the pandemic. The programme was originally part of the Four Southern Opera Classics series celebrating the ancient art of nanxi, from which the more refined works of Cantonese opera, kunqu and other regional operas have evolved.

Another piece in this Series Praying to the Moon, a beloved Cantonese opera by the genre’s famous playwright Tong Tik-sang, will be held at the Auditorium of the Ko Shan Theatre on 7 Nov in two parts. For details, please click here.
