“I maintain that a pure musical note means nothing unless it is pinned down in life, blood and locale; otherwise, it is a worthless toy.” – Leoš Janáček (1854–1928)
Few composers could be more emblematic of the city of Brno than Leoš Janáček, who spent the majority of his career working in the city and drawing inspiration from its people. In this documentary, follow the footsteps of the composer through his busy life as an educator, music critic, researcher, and family man: from the abbey that provided his boyhood education to the homes where he loved and lost his children; from the vegetable market where he collected snippets of overheard conversation for his iconic “speech tunes”, to the National Theatre Brno, where he premiered his landmark opera Jenůfa in 1904.
