The Diary of One who Disappeared is a dramatic song cycle about a naïve farm boy’s illicit and overwhelming passion for a dark-haired gypsy. Full of quivering rhythms, stark silences, innuendo and psychological depth, this haunting song cycle was in many ways
uncharacteristic of the piano music of its time. Before the concert, Music educator Calvin Lai looks at the peculiarities of the libretto, as well as the late career successes inspired by Janáček’s hidden desire for his own unattainable heroine: Kamila Stösslová.
