Anarchy, hilarity and a singing nose, in Shostakovich’s satirical spectacular

Introduction

Anarchy, hilarity and a singing nose, in Shostakovich’s satirical spectacular

Written when Shostakovich was just 22, The Nose takes Nikolai Gogol’s classic comedy and goes to town: an uproarious, absurdist satire in which the star role is played by a singing, dancing human nose. This brand new production from acclaimed Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov debuted as recently as October 2021, and has already drawn rave reviews. It is conducted by another Russian, Vladimir Jurowski—an orchestra leader who has become a byword for energy, insight and “blazing artistic integrity”. This exhilarating production brings out all the surreal comedy and human absurdity of an opera that has to be seen to be believed.
