Le Quai - Angers / Compagnie MXM
Opening Night

This cross-media production, featuring both screen and stage performances artfully interwoven together, was adapted specially for Isabelle Adjani from the original screenplay for John Cassavetes’s classic 1977 film Opening Night. The play is as intriguingly ambiguous and thought-provoking as the film which inspired it.

Screen techniques and stagecraft combine powerfully in a cross-media production featuring a tour de force performance from Isabelle Adjani

Isabelle Adjani is the only actress to have achieved the distinction of winning five César awards—the French equivalent of the Oscars. This artfully woven cross-media production was adapted especially for her from the original screenplay of John Cassavetes’s classic 1977 film Opening Night. Cyril Teste directs her in a powerful and emotionally charged performance as Myrtle, a troubled, middle-aged actress traumatised by the sudden accidental death of a fan. As she works with her director on a new play, she struggles to make sense of her role on stage and in life. A spellbinding exploration of talent under pressure, the play is as intriguingly ambiguous as the film which inspired it, leaving audiences with much to ponder.
