Macbettu (Macbeth) is the Sardinian adaptation of the great Shakespearian drama of ambition and the supernatural, staged with audacious physicality and an all-male cast by director Alessandro Serra.
The masculine physicality of Shakespearian tragedy brought viscerally to life

This revelatory production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, one of his greatest tragedies, is far moved from its original location. Director Alessandro Serra sees parallels between the tough masculine world of Macbeth’s Scotland, with its rugged landscape and close connection to the supernatural, and the terrain and historic culture of Sardinia.

The ominous, violent, wintery medieval world originally evoked in a Jacobean theatre is brought vividly to life in its new setting. Serra has chosen to stage the play as Shakespeare would have: with an all-male cast, including a menacing Lady Macbeth. The power of the interpretation rests on the physical and vocal performances of the actors, Serra’s imaginative use of sonic elements that draw on Sardinia’s natural environment, and the inspired, stony, starkly-lit set.
