A new Chinese Hamlet for our time
Star Chinese actors in a dynamic new Hamlet

The world’s most famous play comes to the HKAF in a star-studded production of a dynamic, contemporary Chinese translation.

Hamlet’s new Chinese translation was specially commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC)’s ‘Shakespeare Folio Project’, which aims to create accessible translations for Chinese audiences. With the help of Stratford-based RSC experts and a company of actors, directors and playwrights from the UK and China, translator Li Jianming developed a nuanced script straight from the rehearsal room.

Director Li Liuyi returns to the RSC series after his sold-out 2017 production of King Lear in Beijing. Highly reputed in international theatre circles for his contemporary Chinese aesthetics, Li is exceptionally skilled at meticulously re-interpreting global classics through integrating Chinese opera with contemporary theatre. His Hamlet features a distinguished mainland cast led by superstars Hu Jun (Red Cliff) and Pu Cunxin as well as veteran actress Lu Fang, with costumes by award-winning Hong Kong art director and movie designer, William Cheung (In the Mood for Love, The Grandmaster).

Li Liuyi's Hamlet team strikes gold with this interpretation that grips from start to finish. A landmark theatre event.
