Entertainment Weekly *****
More than sword-crossing in linguistic faux pas, Chinglish is the work of David Henry Hwang (M. Butterfly) at its most cross-culturally fluent, if grammatically incorrect. The New York based Tony Award-winning playwright has concocted this romantic, sexy comedy in which an American businessman looking to score a lucrative contract in the Mainland meets and falls for a government official. In the midst of hilarious mistranslations, he finds himself caught in the turmoil of power, love and money. Will he be lost in translation?
Chinglish (The Set Changes)
The set changes feature two turntables, automated armchairs, moving walls, flying screens and curtains, even walking actors – all to the energetic beats of c-pop.
Performed in English and Putonghua with English and Chinese surtitles
This production contains some strong language, brief smoking scenes, brief strobe light effects and adult content.
