
The 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival organises the “Voices of Women” Photography Exhibition 40 years after the United Nations designated 1975 International Women’s Year. The Exhibition comprises 51 outstanding photographs selected from about 1,500 entries received in the “Voices of Women” Photography Competition.

The Gold Award of The 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival’s “Voices of Women” Photography Competition is won by Xiong Meng Fan.
Photograph Title: “The Granny Who Teaches”
Photographer’s Description: “This photo shows a granny guiding her grandchildren on their homework. Children in the mountains are mostly left-behind children. The old granny takes care of her grandchildren all year round. Her hardships touch the viewer.”

The Silver Award of The 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival’s “Voices of Women” Photography Competition is won by Lisa Liu.

Photographer’s Description: “Everyone has a different role to play. The most important thing is taking responsibility, and doing their best.”

One of the Bronze Awards of The 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival’s “Voices of Women” Photography Competition is won by Chow Fun Kau.
Photograph Title: “I am a Conductor”
Photographer’s Description: “During the cold winter, women in the countryside are busy producing Gua Mian noodle to help make ends meet. Gua Mian noodle is a countryside cuisine in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Bright sunshine and strong north wind are necessary conditions for its production. ”

Photographer’s Description: “The grannies are dutiful and responsible. They work every day rain or shine. Even the worst conditions cannot stop them from contributing to society.”

Photographer’s Description: “She performs the ‘pulling’ motion patiently, again and again. This old lady adroitly practices the soon-to-be-lost craft of noodle-drying and makes long noodle beds…Will there still be a chance to witness this a few years later?”

Photographer’s Description: “Face to the red earth and back to the sky, the woman harvests a year of hard work. The women who farm have no clean and beautiful clothing, no slender fingers, nor fair and smooth skin, but their contributions fill the granaries of their homes.”

Photographer’s Description: “Even though this picture only shows the back of a female photographer in a mosque, we can still feel her concentration and focus as she accomplishes her assignment – to capture this beautiful indoor rainbow.”

Photograph Title: “Heaven Rewards the Diligent”
Photographer’s Description: “While still a few months old, she already became the daughter-in-law of a Hong Kong farmer family, plowing and doing menial work. When the university was being built she carried cement. In the 70s, she went to England and washed dishes. Afterwards she opened a restaurant. In the 90s she returned. She has been thrifty her entire life, and in return her grandchildren are successful academically.”
