Romania’s acclaimed theatre brings a profoundly moving portrait of a family undone by love and loss

Hailed as the “Father of American Drama”, Eugene O’Neill penned Long Day’s Journey into Night in 1941, drawing with extraordinary candour on the wounds of his youth and complexities of his family. The play was so intimate, painful and unflinchingly autobiographical that O’Neill requested that it not be published until 25 years after his death. But it was eventually premiered in 1956, earning him his fourth Pulitzer Prize and becoming enshrined as his magnum opus.

In the hands of renowned European director Timofey Kulyabin, and brought to life by Romania’s longstanding Radu Stanca National Theatre, Sibiu, O’Neill’s play becomes a night-long journey between past and present. In this version, we meet Edmund Tyrone—the playwright’s alter-ego—approaching the end of his life. On this final night, Edmund stays in a hotel room wrapped by walls that move when memories emerge. He summons his family members who helped shape him. And as they gather together, they revisit old wounds, confront what was left unsaid, forgive and, finally, receive forgiveness.

At the 2026 UNITER Awards, Romania’s most prestigious theatre awards, the production won the award for Best Performance, with Nicu Mihoc named Best Actor in a Leading Role. Before that, the play also made history as the first Romanian theatrical production to receive a specialised high-definition cinema release across major cities in the USA.
