Lost Dog—The Last Hamlet

They cancelled Hamlet. The Prince showed up anyway.

Hamlet has been banned. He’s the main character in one of the most-performed plays in the history of the theatre, but here’s the problem: He’s depressed, violent and confused. A chronic procrastinator. And, depending on who you ask, responsible for many of the issues of our era. So why return, yet again, to this indecisive “hero” when we need new stories for new times?

Because Hamlet himself has something to say.

The Prince is asking us for a last chance to understand things from his perspective. (After all, his father has been murdered.) He tells us that due to cuts in arts funding, some characters will be played by puppets but aided by his two versatile fellow performers—Miguel Altunaga (who creates and dances for Rambert) and Hannah Shepherd (the recent winner of the National Dance Award for Outstanding Modern Performance). Together, they insist there’s a story we absolutely need to hear.

Re-imagined as the play’s final performance, The Last Hamlet is a fiercely intelligent, darkly comic collision of theatre, dance and music. It brings fresh wit and startling originality to timeless questions of grief, revenge, love and identity.

As the Prince fights to prove that his story still matters, the final decision belongs to the audience—will this really be the last Hamlet?
