In Aristophanes’ masterpiece Lysistrata, courageous Athenian women launch an unprecedented “Make Love, Not War” campaign and seize the citadel, turning the battle of the sexes into a riotous and laughter-filled spectacle.

This outrageous 2,000-year-old classic comes to life in a groundbreaking 2026 Sino-Greek co-production by the HKAF and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre. The production is packed with cross-cultural details, such as the Chinese craft-inspired costumes and a classic Greek fountain to real-time live bullet chat. Audiences are transported into a surreal, imaginative world that is classically rooted, delightfully eccentric and visually stunning.

The story has been adapted by renowned Greek director Katerina Evangelatos, with a Chinese script crafted by award-winning playwright Nick Yu. This dynamic Sino-Greek collaboration preserves Aristophanes’ signature wit and the festive energy of Greece, while the play’s ancient plot and uninhibited dialogue are re-imagined as a fiercely relevant commentary that strikes a resonant chord with contemporary women.

After premiering to thunderous applause in Shanghai in 2026, Lysistrata and her sisters now take centre stage in Hong Kong. Through this wild extravaganza of music, dance, and uninhibited wit, audiences will come face to face with the defining issues of our time.
