Arthur Nauzyciel returns to the HKAF to direct a new Chinese-language production

One of Shakespeare’s most devastating tragedies is re-imagined in a striking new Chinese production. As one man's ambition spirals beyond control and one woman relentlessly forces the hand of fate, power, desire and guilt become fatally entwined, driving Macbeth and Lady Macbeth towards their inevitable downfall.

With their long-standing collaboration and exceptional onstage chemistry, celebrated actors Hu Jun and Lu Fang take on the iconic roles of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth in this new Chinese-language production. Their artistic partnership in theatre stretches back to the 1990s, from their early collaboration in Military Train to their appearance together in Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, and later as a doomed couple in Cao Yu’s classic Thunderstorm.

And now, the duo return once again to the world of Shakespeare to embody one of theatre’s most famous and dangerous partnerships.

Directed by acclaimed French director Arthur Nauzyciel, Artistic Director of France’s Théâtre National de Bretagne, this full-scale production takes a fresh look at the unforgettable descent of the iconic Shakespearean couple. This major new production will receive its world premiere at the Hong Kong Arts Festival.
