A story of unrequited love, shattered friendship and haunting regret unfolds with heart-stirring beauty in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. National Theatre Brno’s powerful staging brings this Romantic-era classic vividly to life—for two performances only.

Burning passions and shattered fates: an operatic masterpiece of unrequited love

Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin—an opera in “lyrical scenes”, as the composer described it—makes a rare appearance in Hong Kong. Based on Alexander Pushkin’s celebrated verse novel, this deeply human story explores the longing of youth and the devastating consequences of unrequited love.

Tchaikovsky’s lush, emotionally nuanced score traces a trajectory of broken hearts, betrayed friendships and bittersweet reversal—its beauty and universality transcending time, language and culture. At its heart is the story of Tatyana, a thoughtful and introspective young woman who boldly confesses her love for the handsome but alienated Onegin. He coldly rejects her—yet, years later, the tables have turned. Having finally realised that he loves her, Onegin discovers that he cannot correct his mistake and is left to confront his regret.

Highlights include Tatyana’s Letter Scene confessing her love, Lensky’s haunting aria before he is slain in a duel with his friend Onegin, and the elegant Polonaise depicting the glittering high society where the older Tatyana has found her place. With its lyrical beauty and devastating emotional truth, Eugene Onegin remains one of Tchaikovsky’s most touching masterpieces.

This acclaimed production from Brno—an historic centre of musical excellence—brings to life one of the most poetic and psychologically rich operas of the Romantic era, combining intimate lyricism with dramatic grandeur.

Advance bookings will start at 10am on 16 October 2025
