In search of a “Hong Kong sound”, Hong Kong pianist Chiyan Wong draws inspiration from local fishermen’s songs, fusing elements of folk music with the lively rhythms of Brazilian genres such as bossa nova. To discover the origins of these inspirations, Dr Stephen Cheung Kwok-hung, a scholar specialising in Hong Kong’s traditional folk songs, will host an exploration of local fishermen’s music, followed by Wong discussing his personal reflections and insights into the creative process behind his music. Wong will also share his music live, giving participants a chance to experience the fusion of Hong Kong culture with Latin jazz music up close.
