Often hailed as a “living fossil in the history of Chinese music”, Nanyin is among the oldest surviving forms of Han Chinese music and is recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. With its refined structures and timeless melodies, Nanyin preserves the spirit of ancient Central Plains music while embodying the profound cultural heritage of the Minnan region.

The internationally acclaimed Quanzhou ensemble Dianshui Nanyue will host a cultural sharing session following their appearance at the Festival’s World Music Weekend, and you’re invited to experience its compelling fusion of tradition and contemporary artistry.

Co-organiser
Office of the Hon. Yim Kong, Legislative Council Member

Supporting organisations
China Merchants Youth Federation, 1872 Youth Win, Youth Committee of Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association, Greater Bay Area Youth Innovation and Technology Foundation

Dianshui Nanyue

Dianshui Nanyue revitalises Nanyin by blending traditional instruments—the pipa (crooked-neck lute), sanxian (three-stringed instrument), dongxiao (bamboo flute), erxian (bowed string instrument) and clappers—with contemporary musical ideas. The ensemble has captivated international audiences at events such as the 2022 CCTV Spring Festival Gala and the 2024 Seoul Music Week. In 2023, it received the Star of Discovery award at the Global Awards for World Heritage Education Innovative Cases held by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre, recognising its contributions to preserving and promoting Nanyin’s timeless beauty.
