Curious about the fishermen’s songs that inspired Hong Kong-born pianist Chiyan Wong’s music, which will be performed at his concerts on 14 and 15 March? Join us for an outdoor excursion to Kau Sai Village—a fishing village located in Sai Kung’s Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. Gain an appreciation of the rich heritage, religion and lifestyles of local fishermen, and experience some of the city’s intangible cultural heritage in person.

Participants will visit the Kau Sai Village Story Room and Hung Shing Temple, a declared monument, where a traditional festival—the birthday of Hung Shing, the patron god of the fishing community—takes place every year in the second lunar month. Led by local fishermen, participants will join a talk and workshop about fishermen’s songs, as well as enjoy live demonstrations of various fishermen’s life skills, providing a deep insight into the enduring legacy of Hong Kong’s fishing traditions.

Scheduled for a weekend, the guided tour is designed for all members of the family. After the conclusion of the tour, participants may, at their own discretion, walk the Herbal Plant Trail, or take ferries to Leung Shuen Wan and Sai Kung Town Centre to enjoy Hong Kong’s beautiful environment and delicious food.

Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark

The Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark is home to some of the city’s most stunning geological features. Its main attractions include well-outcropped rhyolitic volcanic hexagonal rock columns and comprehensive sedimentary rock formations formed from the Devonian to the Paleogene eras (about 400 to 55 million years ago). Encompassing diverse ecological resources as well as rich cultural heritage such as well-preserved Hakka walled villages, fishing villages and historical relics such as temples, the Geopark provides a unique and intriguing natural landscape.
