One of the most iconic works in the Liyuan opera repertoire, Chan Sen and Wu Niang—also known as The Tale of the Lychee Mirror—traces its origins to the Ming dynasty, with surviving scripts dating back to the 17th century. The opera remains deeply cherished in Southern Fujian-dialect-speaking regions of China and is frequently performed by the “Little Liyuan” school of Liyuan opera. In this event, participants will experience selected highlights of the opera through play reading and chanting by performers, complemented with live music performed by 10 musicians. Award-winning veteran performer Zeng Jingping, along with other senior Liyuan opera artists, will present selected excerpts and introduce the genre’s distinguishing features, offering insights into ways to appreciate this enduring work.
