Liu Yichang’s The Drunkard is a Hong Kong literary classic that had a huge impact on the arts, including the 54th HKAF’s eponymous theatre play directed by Sebastian Kaiser and Wong Kar-wai’s movie 2046. The Drunkard follows the story of a desperate writer against the backdrop of 1960s Hong Kong.

This cultural event in Sheung Wan transports you back to Hong Kong of the 1960s, providing not only insights into the cultural and historical significance of Sheung Wan district, but the lives of the printing industry practitioners who are depicted in The Drunkard. Participants will visit Habyt Bridges’ Tong Lau Experience Room, which reconstructs the living conditions of residents during the period, and take part in a guided walking tour around the neighbourhood to learn about the community, the architecture and some famous movie locations. This event culminates in an interactive workshop involving movable-type printing, a traditional technique listed as part of Hong Kong’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. Both the walking tour and the workshop will be conducted by native resident and printmaking expert Mr Yam of the Kwong Wah Printing Company.

Kwong Wah Printing Company

Founded around 1954, the Kwong Wah Printing Company is renowned for providing movable-type printing services to the community. After the arrival of new technology, movable-type printing was gradually replaced and became a part of the city’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. The company is now managed by the second-generation successor, Yam Wai-sang, who oversaw the transition to offset printing and has now spent more than 50 years in the printing industry. After obtaining his docent qualifications, Mr Yam now endeavours to pass on the knowledge and techniques related to movable-type printing to the next generation through workshops and appreciation events.
