Yandong Grand Singers & Bulgarian Eva Quartet
Polyphonic singing from Guizhou and Bulgaria: distant cultures, parallel voices
Kam Grand Song, the polyphonic choral tradition of Guizhou’s Kam people, was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2009. In this practice passed down through community life across the generations, multiple vocal lines interweave to create richly layered harmonies.
The Yandong Grand Singers, among the foremost performers of Kam polyphony, will share the stage at the Festival with Bulgaria’s Eva Quartet. Rooted in the tradition of Bulgarian women’s polyphonic singing, the Quartet’s members are also core vocalists of the Grammy Award-winning choir Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares.
From Guizhou’s mountain villages to the Balkans, two ancient polyphonic traditions will meet on one stage.
