Yun Zeng x Zijian Wei—Horn and Piano Concert

A rare horn and piano concert: hear the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Principal Horn up close

Concerts focusing on the horn are comparatively rare in Hong Kong—some say the instrument is the orchestra’s most difficult to master. Any tiny shift in embouchure can result in a cracked note. Precision is integral, yet elusive. Yun Zeng, gold medallist at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, and the prize winner of the ARD International Music Competition in 2021, is coming to show why he’s celebrated for his exceptional mastery of the instrument.

Zeng performs an intimate duo programme alongside his old friend, Zijian Wei, the winner of the 2024 Cleveland Internation Piano Competition. A selection of Tchaikovsky favourites are guaranteed crowd pleasers—The Nutcracker’s Pas de Deux, the Polonaise from the opera Eugene Onegin and the fifth symphony’s hummable horn solo.

Wind players will especially appreciate Beethoven’s deceptively demanding Horn Sonata. The evening’s second half takes on a light-hearted Latin flavour, with Manuel de Falla’s Suite Populaire Espagñole. Wei also takes the spotlight on the keyboard in a dazzling showcase of beloved solo piano pieces, including Ravel’s La Valse.
